Urban Impact worked with artist Ronald McDowell, who wanted to create a park along Fourth Avenue to honor Eddie Kendricks. The Birmingham-born Kendricks led the legendary Motown singing group, The Temptations.
Urban Impact’s staff arranged meetings between Birmingham City officials and McDowell, who submitted a design proposal for the park. The city eventually approved the plan. The staff then provided technical assistance on the construction project, located at the southwestern corner of Fourth Avenue North and 18th Street, on the site of the former Brock’s Drugs building. Construction was completed in 1999.
The memorial is used as a public park. It’s also a popular tourist destination, attracting more than 100,000 tourists since its opening.
