Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Birmingham Civil Rights InstituteThe Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a living interpretive museum and research center that documents the struggles of citizens involved in the American Civil Rights Movement, focusing  primarily on Birmingham, Alabama, through the 1950s and 1960s.

Open since 1992, the BCRI believes that telling the stories and lessons learned from that era is crucial to understanding not only African American history, but American history in the larger context of world history. Its programs and services are intended to promote research, provide historical information and encourage discussion on civil and human rights locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Institute is located within the boundaries of the 4th Avenue Business District. As such, Urban Impact played a role in the site selection process and offered technical assistance to the city as its leaders laid the foundation for the BCRI’s organizational framwork.
