Arthur Shores Law Center

Urban Impact staff helped identify an investor for the vacant building at the corner of Fifth Avenue North and 16th Street. The staff coordinated several meetings between the owner and the investor/developer to find funds from both the private and public sectors. After the developer secured those funds, Urban Impact continued to provide technical assistance on the project.

Renovations were completed in 1996. The Arthur D. Shores Law Center is now an office building primarily for lawyers. It is named after Shores, a prominent civil rights attorney whose lawsuits helped dismantle state-sanctioned segregation in Birmingham and beyond. The building also houses a mini law museum that is named in Shores’ honor.
