Colored Masonic Temple

Colored Masonic Temple (Established in 1922) – 1630 4th Avenue North.  The four Corinthian columns and pediment adorn the façade of this seven-story structure, Housed numerous Black professional offices and the NAACP. Also called the Most Wonderful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F.& A.M. of Alabama.

The Carver Theatre (Established in 1941) 1631 4th Avenue North.  Movie theater of Black patrons and home of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

Citizens Savings Bank (Established in 1928)300 18th Street North.  The second Black-owned and operated bank in Birmingham.

Pythian Temple (Penny Savings Bank)

Alabama Penny Savings Bank/Pythian Temple (Established in 1913) 310 18th Street, North. The first of three banks operating in the 1900’s owned and operated by Blacks.  Acquired by the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias in 1915.


A. G. Gaston Motel (Built in 1954) – 1510 5th Avenue, North. The first Black motel in Birmingham built by Black business mogul A.G. Gaston. Featuring master suites and a first-class restaurant for African-Americans.

Metropolitan  A.M.E. Zion Church (Organized in 1885) 1530 4th Avenue, North. Originally called Scotts Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. One of the key meeting churches in the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement.
